Outreach and Professional Development Workshops
The Berryman Institute strives to meet the professional development needs of USDA Wildlife Services and the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC). Workshops are available to all Wildlife Services and NWRC employees. The Berryman Institute provides all instruction and educational materials at no cost, but participants must arrange for and provide their own travel, lodging, and meals.

Partnering with Legislative and Public Affairs, this new workshop will introduce students to a variety of topics related to effective communication, including writing, public speaking, interpersonal communication, and public relations. The workshop will be heavily interactive with much time devoted to exercises, discussion, videos, and case studies. The workshop is designed for individuals already possessing good skills in writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication. Limited enrollment.

Introduction to Geospatial Tools and Techniques: GIS and GPS |
 |
This course will help participants apply GIS and GPS technology to wildlife damage management problems and issues using the latest tools and software. Topics range from GIS concepts to creating maps and locating online spatial data sources. This introductory course will encompass a broad scope of GIS and GPS functions relative to natural resource management, with an emphasis on wildlife damage issues. No prior experience or knowledge with GIS or GPS is required, but basic computer skills are needed.

Advanced Riflery for the Wildlife Professional |

This course will cover a number of topics relating to rifle equipment selection, set-up, maintenance, ballistics, and field applications in wildlife damage management. This 3-day highly interactive workshop incorporates a mix of classroom lecture, demonstration, discussion, and on-the-range shooting exercises. Participants should have a good working knowledge of rifles and their uses in wildlife damage management.

Chemical Immobilization and Euthanasia of Wildlife- Initial Certification or Recertification Courses |

These three day workshops are designed to meet the requirements for I&E certification and recertification. The initial course provides classroom and hands-on instruction in the proper use of chemical immobilization and euthanasia techniques for wildlife. Topics such as legal and ethical responsibilities, drug delivery systems, dosage calculations, and wildlife handling is discussed. The recertification workshop incorporates lecture, demonstrations, case studies, and group discussions. The foundation of the course is a complex and ongoing animal-handling scenario that teams evaluate and discuss with the entire class. Both courses fulfill the live workshop portion of the certification process. Directions to complete the online course will be given.
